Sleep apnea is a chronic medical condition where the affected patient repeatedly stops breathing during sleep. These breathing respirations may be 10 seconds or longer and cause impaired levels of oxygen in the blood. Obstructive apnea is caused by obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. Central sleep apnea is caused by a brain defect to initiate breathing. It can cause and aggravate other medical conditions, including high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke and diabetes. The frequency and duration of these loss of breath determines whether it is mild, moderate or severe sleep apnea. Doctors diagnose Apnea with an overnight test called a sleep study.
Sleep apnea symptoms, in my case, were the first people to ask me if I knew how to spin. I usually pity that "I'll never stay long enough to find out". Later this joke would come back to chase me when the snoring started waking me up. When the sleep apnea syndrome developed, I would wake up for breathing and suffocation.
I do not associate with the creeping sleep disorder, I went to my doctor and complained that he was chronically tired and lacking energy. Of all the tests and questions I went through, I never slept. Unfortunately, I never thought about taking up the subject, guessed did not want to recognize the doctor I snore.
Undiagnosed, sleep apnea effects became worse when concentration capacity began to slow down. Part of the problem is that all sleep apnea symptoms do not come all at once but slowly build up over time. The brain becomes faint of oxygen so you do not reach the deeper sleep and it adversely affects you when it's awake.
The effects I experienced were the first time I fell asleep watching tv and then doing boring work at my desk. I would post inventory numbers and die away long enough to lose my place and have to start over. It began to happen so often that a 15-minute report on fixtures would go well over an hour.
Then came the scary part when I started to fall asleep while driving. Not only during long journeys but many times in short ten or fifteen minutes travel. I had to drive around and guess what I would do asleep.
The cases would still have progressively worse as recently shown studies show. Mild sleep apnea means that breathing rate is less than 15 times per hour of sleep, moderately, breathing stops 15 to 29 times per hour and hard to stop breathing 30 or more times per hour. This breathing respiration in as little as 11 minutes per night doubles the risk of death and this effect is cumulative and builds for decades. The fact that lack of oxygen delivered to the brain leads to Alzheimer's and dementia.
Fortunately, I've met my wife. She noticed that when I fell asleep I stopped breathing and she became worried. She told her doctor her concern and he met a sleep disorder specialist. I spent the night at a sleep clinic, connected to a lot of threads for my sleep test and sleep apnea diagnoses. Yes, I had severe sleep apnea.
Among the symptoms are snoring, fatigue, sleepiness of the day, headache, swelling of the legs and night burns. Some have night sweats and chest pain. Often waking up, suffocation and gasification for air, one due to lack of oxygen and trying to maintain a normal breathing cycle, this pattern continues with irregular breathing when sleep has taken over. Obesity - Often people who struggle with sleep apnea tend to be overweight. Studies have shown that many were overweight to begin with and that weight contributes to sleep apnea. It is also true that sleep and oxygen deficiency slow down metabolism and more effort is required to burn calories. In addition, people who feel weak eat more and tend less.

The brain cells affected by serotonin include those related to mood, sexual desire and function, appetite, sleep, memory, learning, temperature regulation and some social behavior.
